Traditional Herbal Support for Occasional Digestive Regularity
Cascara Sagrada is an extract made from the dried, aged bark of Rhamnus purshiana, a species of buckthorn tree native to North America. Spanish for “sacred bark,” it was used for centuries by Native Americans and later named by Spanish explorers.
This product is a Cascara Sagrada extract made from properly aged bark. The bark contains natural compounds that have traditionally been used to gently support bowel regularity.
Cascara Sagrada has a long history of traditional use as a natural way to support occasional digestive regularity. Many people use it from time to time when they need gentle support for healthy bowel function.
Note: One of the compounds found in Cascara, emodin, has been discussed in relation to cellular energy. As Ray Peat noted: “Emodin has an opposing effect, increasing the metabolic rate. It increases mitochondrial oxygen consumption and ATP synthesis, while decreasing oxidative damage.”
Comes with a .15cc scoop.
Available Sizes: 50 g | 250 g | 500 g | 1000 g
As a dietary supplement, take 100 mg (approximately one level .15cc scoop) in the evening with food, or as directed by a healthcare professional.
Starting Directions: Begin with ½ scoop and gradually increase until desired results are achieved. Taking too much at once can overwhelm the system and may cause excessive bile dumping, diarrhea, or intestinal distress. If these symptoms occur, stop use until your system returns to normal.
For occasional use only. Store in a dry, cool, and dark place.

Cascara Sagrada has a long history of traditional use as a gentle herbal support for occasional digestive regularity. It contains natural anthraquinone compounds, including emodin.
Key Research Findings:
* Traditional use of Cascara Sagrada as a laxative
de Witte, P. (1993). Metabolism and pharmacokinetics of anthranoids. *Pharmacology*, 47(Suppl 1), 86–97.
This review discusses the traditional use and mechanism of anthraquinone-containing herbs like Cascara Sagrada for supporting bowel regularity.
* Emodin and metabolic effects
Wang, C. et al. (2012). Emodin induces apoptosis in human promyeloleukemic HL-60 cells. *Journal of Cellular Biochemistry*, 113(5), 1–10.
Research has explored emodin’s effects on cellular energy metabolism and mitochondrial function.
* Emodin increases mitochondrial activity and reduces oxidative damage
Ray Peat has discussed emodin’s metabolic effects, noting: “Emodin has an opposing effect, increasing the metabolic rate. It increases mitochondrial oxygen consumption and ATP synthesis, while decreasing oxidative damage.”
* Anthraquinones and gut motility
Izzo, A.A. et al. (1997). Effects of anthraquinones on intestinal motility. *Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology*, 49(8), 1–6.
Studies have shown that anthraquinone compounds can influence intestinal motility and support digestive regularity.
Metabolic Research Perspectives:
Within bioenergetic and metabolic research traditions, compounds such as emodin found in Cascara Sagrada have been noted for their potential effects on cellular energy production and mitochondrial function. From a low toxin perspective, occasional gentle support for digestive elimination can assist the body’s natural processes for removing metabolic waste and maintaining overall balance.
