Protein that keeps working long after you've finished it.

  • Fuller for longer. Micellar casein thickens in the stomach and lets its amino acids out slowly, over several hours. A glass between meals takes the edge off your appetite, so it's easier to skip the snacking.
  • Overnight muscle recovery. Sleep is the longest stretch you go without eating. A slow protein before bed keeps supply coming through the night.
  • Build lean muscle, and protect it during long gaps. Slow, steady protein helps protect muscle when you go hours without food. A complete milk protein with all 9 essential amino acids: 21.5 g protein per scoop, about 2 g leucine and 4.4 g BCAAs. For training days and busy days alike.
  • Calcium for strong bones. Casein carries milk's calcium and phosphorus with it: 37% DV of calcium per scoop.
  • Lean and keto-friendly. 90 calories, 0.2 g carbs, 0.3 g fat and 0 g added sugar per scoop. Easy protein when you're watching carbs or working on body composition.
  • Real micellar casein. Milk proteins concentrated by filtration (not acid or caseinate processing) from pasteurized skim milk. Not calcium caseinate, which digests faster. See the Certificate of Analysis (PDF) in Quality & Sourcing.
  • A fit for bioenergetic eating. Milk protein is a staple of bioenergetic eating, and this is milk protein with nothing added: no seed oils, gums, lecithin or sweeteners. It's naturally rich in calcium. Stir it into milk or blend it with fruit.
  • Just one ingredient. No lecithin of any kind, no gums, no sweeteners, no anti-caking agents, no fillers. Made in the USA. Non-GMO, gluten-free, Kosher Dairy.

Unflavored with a neutral flavor, so it goes into anything. Blend it into a shake, stir it into oats or yogurt, or bake it into pancakes and muffins. Use less liquid and it sets up thick, like a protein pudding.

Mix 1 level scoop (about 25 g, scoop included) into 8–12 oz of water, milk, or your favorite drink. Add the liquid first, then the powder, and shake hard or blend. It's thicker than whey.

Good times to take it:
• Before bed
• Between meals, when you'll go a while without eating

New to casein? Start with half a scoop and work up over a few days. If it feels heavy on the stomach, take less or use more liquid. If you have questions about how much protein suits you, talk to your provider.

The included scoop is the easy guide; a kitchen scale works too if you want it exact.

Storage: Keep tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. No need to refrigerate.

How do I mix it?
Liquid first, then powder. Shake hard for 20–30 seconds in a shaker with a whisk ball, or use a blender. It's naturally thicker than whey.

Why is it harder to mix than some proteins?
There's no lecithin, gum or anti-caking agent in it. That keeps it to one ingredient, but it takes a little more shaking.

When should I take it?
Before bed or between meals, when you want protein that lasts.

Is this the same as calcium caseinate?
No. This is micellar casein, milk proteins concentrated by filtration (not acid or caseinate processing) from pasteurized skim milk. Caseinate is more processed and digests faster.

Can I cook with it?
Yes. It's great in pancakes, overnight oats, yogurt bowls, smoothies and baking.

Can I make protein pudding with it?
Yes. Stir a scoop into a few ounces of milk or yogurt and let it sit a few minutes. Casein thickens on its own.

Is it keto-friendly?
Yes. Each scoop has 0.2 g carbs, 0.3 g fat and 0 g added sugar.

How much leucine per scoop?
About 2 g, with about 4.4 g of BCAAs.

Is it sweetened or flavored?
No. It's unflavored with nothing added, so you choose the taste.

Casein is the slow protein in milk. It feeds you over hours, not minutes, which is why people reach for it before bed and between meals.

Slow protein, steady supply
Boirie Y, Dangin M, Gachon P, Vasson MP, Maubois JL, Beaufrère B (1997). Slow and fast dietary proteins differently modulate postprandial protein accretion. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA, 94(26), 14930–14935. PMID 9405716.
Casein emptied from the stomach slowly and raised blood amino acids gently for hours, while whey came in fast and dropped off. After casein, the body's protein breakdown fell by about a third. Whey didn't do that.

Protein before sleep and overnight recovery
Res PT, Groen B, Pennings B, Beelen M, Wallis GA, Gijsen AP, Senden JM, van Loon LJ (2012). Protein ingestion before sleep improves postexercise overnight recovery. Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 44(8), 1560–1569. PMID 22330017.
Young men who trained in the evening and drank 40 g of casein before sleep had higher overnight muscle protein synthesis and better whole-body protein balance than with a placebo. The casein was digested and absorbed steadily through the night.

Pre-sleep casein in older men
Kouw IW, Holwerda AM, Trommelen J, Kramer IF, Bastiaanse J, Halson SL, Wodzig WK, Verdijk LB, van Loon LJ (2017). Protein ingestion before sleep increases overnight muscle protein synthesis rates in healthy older men: a randomized controlled trial. Journal of Nutrition, 147(12), 2252–2261. PMID 28855419.
Healthy men in their early 70s took casein or a placebo before bed. The casein was properly digested and absorbed through the night, and 40 g raised overnight muscle protein synthesis.

Twelve weeks of training with pre-sleep protein
Snijders T, Res PT, Smeets JS, van Vliet S, van Kranenburg J, Maase K, Kies AK, Verdijk LB, van Loon LJ (2015). Protein ingestion before sleep increases muscle mass and strength gains during prolonged resistance-type exercise training in healthy young men. Journal of Nutrition, 145(6), 1178–1184. PMID 25926415.
Over 12 weeks of strength training, young men who had a casein-based protein drink before sleep gained more strength and muscle size than men who had a placebo.

What the research adds up to
Snijders T, Trommelen J, Kouw IWK, Holwerda AM, Verdijk LB, van Loon LJC (2019). The impact of pre-sleep protein ingestion on the skeletal muscle adaptive response to exercise in humans: an update. Frontiers in Nutrition, 6, 17. PMID 30895177.
This review pulls the pre-sleep studies together. Protein before bed is digested and absorbed overnight and raises muscle protein synthesis while you sleep, a simple way to support recovery and training gains.

Bioenergetic & low-toxin perspective
In Ray Peat-inspired eating, milk and cheese are everyday staples, and casein is milk's main protein. Peat wrote that "The main protein of milk, casein, seems to have some direct antistress effects," and that "Combining milk and cheese with fruits adds to the antistress effect." (raypeat.com)

Calcium is central to Peat's view of milk. He called it "an ecologically favorable source of calcium, protein, sugar, and fat," and wrote that "When there is adequate calcium, vitamin D, and magnesium in the diet, PTH is kept to a minimum" (raypeat.com). In "Calcium and Disease" he added: "A diet of milk and fruit, or milk and meat, provides a nutritional balance with generous amounts of calcium and magnesium," and "Milk has many protective effects besides providing calcium." (raypeat.com)

Each scoop gives you 482 mg calcium (37% DV) in a calcium-forward balance with 314 mg phosphorus, about 1.5 to 1, and very little iron (0.2 mg). For the low-toxin crowd, the label is the point: one ingredient, with no added seed oils, no gums such as carrageenan or xanthan, no lecithin, no sweeteners and no fillers.

Studies Peat cited
Biswas NM, Chattopadhyay A, Sarkar M (2003). Protection of adrenocortical activity by dietary casein in ether anaesthetized rats. Indian Journal of Experimental Biology, 41(4), 367–369. PMID 15255650. (cited in raypeat.com)
In rats fed a 20% casein diet, an acute stressor didn't change adrenal stress markers, which the authors read as a high milk-protein diet helping the body handle acute stress.

Kerstetter JE, Svastisalee CM, Caseria DM, Mitnick ME, Insogna KL (2000). A threshold for low-protein-diet-induced elevations in parathyroid hormone. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 72(1), 168–173. PMID 10871576. (cited in raypeat.com)
In healthy young women, PTH rose within 4 days on diets with 0.7–0.8 g protein per kg, but not at 0.9–1.0 g/kg, so enough protein helps keep calcium balance steady.

Bell J, Whiting SJ (2002). Elderly women need dietary protein to maintain bone mass. Nutrition Reviews, 60(10 Pt 1), 337–341. PMID 12392151. (cited in raypeat.com)
This review found animal protein supported bone, especially in older women, and recommended adequate protein to help maintain bone mass.
