Comfortable digestion and relief from occasional gas and bloating, from one simple ingredient.
- Comfortable digestion. Something simple to reach for after a big, rich or unfamiliar meal.
- Less occasional gas and bloating. Activated charcoal reduced gas after gas-producing meals in double-blind trials.
- Binding in the gut. Activated charcoal is full of tiny pores. They hold on to unwanted material in the digestive tract, and it all leaves together.
- USP/EP grade. Made to United States and European Pharmacopeia standards, from 100% virgin coconut shells, steam-activated.
- Strong adsorption: 46.7% phenazone adsorption power on the current lot (spec: 40.0% minimum). That's where the binding happens.
- Powder, not capsules. More per serving than a typical pair of capsules, and nothing else in it.
Why it fits bioenergetic, low-toxin living. A calm gut is part of steady energy. This is one ingredient, with no fillers or additives. Gluten free, and made without soy or dairy.
A heads-up: fine charcoal goes everywhere. Open the bag gently, over the sink, and stir it into water before you drink. Stools may turn dark; that's normal.
As one customer put it: "I am really pleased to be able to purchase pharmaceutical-grade charcoal powder, the best."

Start low: begin with ½ teaspoon (about 1.5 g) stirred into a glass of water, once a day as needed.
Raise slowly: if you want more, go up to 1 teaspoon. Many people use it only now and then, after a heavy meal.
Timing matters: take it at least 30 minutes before or 2 hours after food, medications and other supplements. Charcoal can hold on to them too.
Drink plenty of water. If you feel constipated, take less or use it less often, and talk with your healthcare provider.

Activated charcoal is carbon with a huge internal surface. In the gut, it adsorbs (holds on to) gas and other material as it passes through.
Activated charcoal and intestinal gas
Hall RG Jr, Thompson H, Strother A (1981). Effects of orally administered activated charcoal on intestinal gas. Am J Gastroenterol 75(3):192-6. PMID 7015846. Volunteers given activated charcoal had less gas after a gas-producing meal than with placebo.
A double-blind trial
Jain NK, Patel VP, Pitchumoni CS (1986). Efficacy of activated charcoal in reducing intestinal gas: a double-blind clinical trial. Am J Gastroenterol 81(7):532-5. PMID 3521259. Activated charcoal reduced breath hydrogen and gas-related discomfort after a gas-producing meal.
Charcoal and simethicone
Jain NK, et al. (1986). Activated charcoal, simethicone, and intestinal gas: a double-blind study. Ann Intern Med 105(1):61-2. PMID 3717809. A second double-blind study on charcoal and intestinal gas.
Why timing matters
Lapatto-Reiniluoto O, et al. (1999). Effect of activated charcoal alone or given after gastric lavage in reducing the absorption of diazepam, ibuprofen and citalopram. Br J Clin Pharmacol 48(2):148-53. PMID 10417490. Charcoal taken with other substances strongly reduced how much was absorbed. That's why we say keep it apart from food, medications and supplements.
Bioenergetic & low-toxin perspective
Ray Peat suggested charcoal now and then as a simple gut tool.
"A few years ago, I heard about a Mexican farmer who collected his neighbors' runt pigs, and got them to grow normally by adding charcoal to their diet." — Ray Peat (https://raypeat.com/articles/nutrition/carrageenan.shtml)
In the same article he mentions "the study in which the lifespan was extended by occasionally adding charcoal to the diet." That's the enterosorption work of Frolkis and colleagues:
Frolkis VV, et al. (1984). Enterosorption in prolonging old animal lifespan. Exp Gerontol 19(4):217-25. PMID 6499964.
